The Frommagio Cheesemaker: One Member’s Positive Experience

Earlier this year, my husband bought me a Frommagio Cheesemaker machine for my birthday. Partly, I think, to encourage me to make cheese again, like I did in the past.

The Fromaggio is an all-in-one, smart home cheesemaker. It comes with recipes for popular cheeses pre-programmed. I’ve made each of the included cheeses, and every one of them has worked. Having a small appliance on the countertop is a noteworthy bonus for cheesemaking. I’m not chained to the stove and heating up the house to make cheese.

It comes with an App that allows the machine to communicate the next step required. The App tells you a two-minute warning so you can wrap up what you’re doing to get back to the kitchen. The automatic temperature control ensures the accuracy of the final product is nearly foolproof. The machine does its own curd-cutting with one of two attachments. For me, maintaining the temperature was the most challenging part of cheesemaking. With the Frommagio, that worry is handled. The included equipment, the bowl, a strainer, and two cutters clean up easily. The parts that require washing are all dishwasher safe for sterilization purposes.

Choose a classic cheese recipe with a few clicks, or create your own unique cheese recipes. Then get real-time notifications, so you never miss a step!

To make a batch of cheese, you need the same ingredients you would for the stovetop method: milk, cultures, and additives. Depending on the cheese made, you might need a press, molds, cheesecloth, wraps, wax, and a cave or fridge to age it.

The Fromaggio is solidly built and doesn’t shift around on the counter. It weighs 23.8 pounds out of the box and takes up a bit of space. (The image shows the stainless steel model on my countertop, with a dish soap bottle for size reference.) The stainless steel model is a workhorse that integrates into most kitchens, whether modern farmhouse or sleek minimalist. If a warmer tone is preferred, for another $46, you can get the model with an artisan-style copper bowl.

For a future upgrade of the Frommagio, my wish list would include a larger pot. The capacity is currently 3 liters, or approximately 0.79 gallons. I would like to see a machine that could hold 5 gallons of milk. The process works, but the final product is approximately 8 ounces of cheese. I’m used to doing large batches on my stovetop. For US users who are not familiar with metric measurements, it can be a little daunting. The App does have the ability to store your own personal recipes, which I find is a significant plus. Overall, I love the machine and I’m glad it has allowed me to start making cheese again.
