Every Herd Has a Story: Why Your Current Herd is the Perfect Starting Point

When we first started with Miniature Jersey cattle, purity wasn’t even part of the conversation—it was all about the cows themselves. Their personalities, their manageable size, their rich milk… that’s what drew us in.

Like many people, we began with animals that weren’t “perfect” on paper, but they were perfect for us.

Overcoming Intimidation

Over time, though, we started learning more about breeding—about lines, traits, and yes, purity. At first, it felt a bit intimidating. There’s a lot of information out there, and it can sometimes seem like you have to choose between where you are now and where you want to be. But the truth is, you don’t have to give up the cows you love to start moving in a new direction.

A Deliberate Approach

For us, learning about purity didn’t mean making drastic changes overnight. It meant asking more questions. Paying closer attention to pedigrees. Being more intentional with breeding decisions. Maybe choosing a bull with stronger lineage, or selecting for traits that move the herd closer to a specific goal over time.

And that’s really the heart of it—progress, not perfection.

Every Cow (and Breeder) Adds Value

If you have Mini Jerseys that aren’t fully purebred, you are absolutely still part of this community. Your animals still have value. Your experiences still matter. Every herd has a story, and every breeder is on their own path. Some start with registered, high-percentage animals; others build slowly, generation by generation. Both paths are valid.

Building Your Future, One Calf at a Time

What’s exciting is that small, thoughtful decisions today can shape the future of your herd. Each calf is an opportunity. Each breeding is a step forward. You don’t have to rush, and you don’t have to compare your journey to anyone else’s.

You Are an Essential Part of This Community

So if you’ve ever felt like you don’t quite “fit” because your Mini Jerseys aren’t pure—please know that you do. You belong here just as much as anyone else. Whether you’re just getting started or refining your breeding program, you’re contributing to the growth and strength of this community.

Keep learning. Keep asking questions. And most importantly, keep loving your cows—because that’s where it all begins.

Key Takeaways

  • Start Where You Are: You don’t need a perfectly pedigreed herd to be a valued member of the Mini Jersey community; your current animals are the perfect foundation for your journey.
  • Progress, Not Perfection: Breeding, lineage, and genetic goals are best approached as a marathon, not a sprint. Small, consistent, and intentional choices build a better herd over time.
  • Education is Empowering: Don’t be intimidated by technical breeding terms. Focus on learning, asking the right questions, and understanding your lines at your own pace.
  • Both Paths are Valid: Whether you are starting with unregistered stock or refining a high-percentage program, you are contributing to the strength and future of the breed.
  • You Belong: The PMJS community is built on a shared love for these animals. You belong in this space, and your experiences—and your cows—matter.

Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

We’d love to hear about the story behind your herd! Whether you’re just starting out or have been working toward your breeding goals for years, your journey is a vital part of our community. What has been the most rewarding part of your path so far? Do you have questions about your next steps? Drop a comment below—we’re all here to learn from one another.

  1. I love that Tracy explains her process. I started from small standard Jerseys, a variation of the path to Purebred Mini Jerseys. I focused on introducing traits like A2, Polled Frisian, and conformation while reducing stature. I started with an A1/A2 cow, Buttermilk, and bred her to an A1/A2 son of Maack Dairy Eclipes-P-ET, Frey’s Dairy Toro, and got an A1/A1, horned cow, NW Ruby. A step backwards! Despite the setback, that locked in excellent Jersey conformation and production that carries through to this day, 6 generations later. We bred Ruby to MPRR Little Firecracker, resulting in our first Mini Jersey calf, NW Fern (40.5″ @ 8 yrs, A1/A2, PF/H). It’s very rewarding that Ruby’s grandson, NW Vanguard (40.5″ @ 3 yrs, A2/A2, PF/PF) and great grandson, NW Lumberjack (41″ @ 3 yrs, A2/A2, PF/H), are collected for AI so our work carries on. So cool to watch Tracy’s program coming together!
